The changes made to your car though almost undetectable are none the less changes, and as with all modifications you are obligated to inform your insurance company.

We do now offer a mobile service here as in the previous answer, the remapping of the vehicle is simply one part of the service, testing and tuning that we deliver as part of our remapping service. We need access to our specialist diagnostic equipment and the internet if need be to ensure that the remap we provide is truly getting the most from your vehicle. Therefore offering a mobile service for remapping should be as simple as adding a new file into the ECU overwriting the old version, after fully testing and driving the vehicle to make sure it suits both the vehicle and the requirements of the driver, then and only then will we be happy with the tune, this is something we feel strongly about as so many, so called mobile re-mappers simply flash the ECU with generic files bought off the internet and Ebay, be aware that these companies offering this mobile remapping service are not even doing half the job.

At Remap-UK we take ECU remapping very seriously and not just as a simple install of some software like so many other companies will. The file is written by us and installed by us, this is only done after your car has been fully checked over for any undetected faults that may be unknown to you affecting the running of the vehicle. After it has been re-mapped it is then tested and adjusted until we have gained the maximum benefit that can be attained from the remapping.Due to this we cannot give the quick and easy guide times of our competitors who are simply installing a file. You should however be aware that anyone offering this service in a matter of 30 mins or an hour will not be providing the same level of service, testing and tuning that we deliver here at Remap-UK (Nottingham) as standard. We normally like to have the vehicle for a couple of hours minimum, this should give us enough time to complete full tuning, remapping, testing and rectifying faults.

Nearly all European petrol and diesel cars with an ECU (Electronic control unit) can be remapped.

The remapping changes a software file in the cars ECU, so you will not lose the remap should you disconnect your vehicles battery.

This is a point of some contention, generally it is perceived that for a manufacturer to cancel a warranty due to someone having after-market services or parts added to their vehicle is an anti competitive practice and therefore against European laws. However if it is stated in your documentation that remapping your ECU will invalidate the warranty, then it will probably do so.Unlike many other remapping companies we only carry out custom chip remaps which are tested and tuned to suit your vehicle and your needs, we naturally only modify the vehicle to within the safety limits of the vehicle and its components and certainly will not push your vehicle beyond those limits. The European law states that a manufacturer cannot cite after-market services or parts to void a warranty or reject a warranty claim. The manufacturer need to prove that the service or part is the direct cause of the failure and the burden of proof rests with them.

In the unlikely event that you would want your vehicle to revert back to its standard settings after a test drive, then we can of course return your vehicle ECU to its original pre-remap settings with no cost to yourself at all.

When or if done correctly! Your remap applied to your car or van, should not have any impact when it comes to MOT time.

What is an exhaust emissions test?

An exhaust emissions test ensures the levels of pollutants emitted from your car exhaust are within legal limits.

The test is compulsory for all diesel, petrol and gas-powered vehicles with four or more wheels:

  • For petrol or gas-powered vehicles first used before 1 August 1975, a visual test is applied
  • For petrol or gas-powered vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1975, a metered test is applied
  • For diesel vehicles first used before 1 August 1979, a visual test is applied
  • For diesel vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1979, a metered smoke test is applied

Petrol vehicles be checked using an analyser to assess the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC).

The first test consists of checking the emissions at an engine speed of 2,500rpm – 3,000rpm. During this test, CO must be at or less than 0.2%.

The second test consists of checking the emissions at an engine speed of 450rpm – 1,500rpm. During this test, CO must be at or less than 0.3% these settings are usually controlled by what’s referred to as a Lambda sensor.

For Diesel engines, the MOT emissions rely on a ‘Metered Smoke Test’

Prior to the smoke test, the MOT operative will make sure that the engine is functioning correctly by raising the engine speed to approx 2,500rpm. The engine RPM will then be slowly increased to the maximum to check the operation of the engine.

  • If the engine speed stabilises at its maximum speed, the engine will be returned to the idle speed and will move on to the next part of the test
  • If it is not able to stabilise, the engine will be returned to the idle speed and the vehicle will fail the test

For vehicles that actually pass the first part, the MOT operative will prepare a smoke meter by insert the sampling probe into the exhaust tailpipe. There is usually a sticker with the manufacturers smoke limit under the slam panel of the bonnet near the VIN and paint colours, this figure can not be exceeded on the test, however if your engine is healthy and in good serviceable condition this figure should be achievable even with a remap. Diesel engines failing this test is usually down to either blocked air filters or leaking injectors out of the ECU control parameters.
